When a smoker tries to stop smoking, the withdrawal symptoms include dizziness, depression, extreme anxiety, trouble in concentrating, weight gain, tiredness, boredom, slowed heart rate, sleep disturbances, nightmares, irritation, frustration, anger etc. These symptoms will immediately stop once the person starts back smoking, which makes quitting so difficult.

However, it is advisable that you do stop smoking and the immediate benefits of quitting are quite compelling. Half an hour after you quit smoking, your blood pressure and heart rate will drop and 12 hours after, the carbon monoxide levels within your blood will go back to normal. A few weeks after quitting, your lung function and circulation will increase and a few months later the coughing will stop or decrease and you won’t be as short of breath when exerting yourself. If you continue for 5 years, your risk for smoking related cancers will be cut in half and 15 years later, your risk of getting coronary heart disease is the same as a non smoker.
